Validate tax IDs on company applications

Use Tax ID Pro to check the tax registration ID on each company application before you approve it.

Onboard B2B can automatically check the tax registration ID on each company application using Tax ID Pro, a third-party validation service.

Enable validation

  1. Open the Onboard B2B app and go to App settings and tools.

  2. Under Integrations, select Tax ID Pro.

  3. Select Turn on.

After enabling, each application's tax registration ID and country are validated when the application is submitted or edited. Turning validation off later hides existing results instead of deleting them. Turning it back on re-checks each application the next time you open it.

What it checks

  • Whether the ID is valid for the applicant's country. Around 115 countries are currently supported. View the full list of supported countries here.

  • Which format it matched, such as a VAT number or an employer identification number.

  • Who the number is registered to. For VAT numbers in the EU, the UK and Australia, we compare the registered company name with the company name on the application.

Optionally, require a valid ID before submission

In the company application form editor, select the Tax registration ID field and check the box for Require a valid tax registration ID before submitting.

Status

What it means

Valid

The ID is well-formed and the registered name matches the company name.

Format valid

The ID is well-formed. We couldn't look up who it belongs to, so check the owner yourself.

Partial match

The ID is registered, but the name only partly matches the application.

Name mismatch

The ID is registered to a different name. Check before approving.

Invalid

The ID isn't a valid format for that country.

Not validated

We couldn't reach a verdict. This may mean the applicant did not provide a tax ID or country, the country isn't supported, or there was another problem or error with validation.

Additional notes

  • Country: We use the tax country the applicant selected. If there isn't one, we use the shipping address country, then the billing address country.

  • Registry names: Some countries, including Spain and Germany, don't release the registered company name. You'll see "Format valid" for those.

  • Addresses: We show the registered address as a reference but do not match against it, because companies often ship somewhere other than their registered office.

  • Edits: Editing the tax ID, country or company name on an application automatically triggers re-validation.
